This past Sunday I taught a lesson about family history. It was kind of tricky since we attend a Karen and Karenni branch and most of our members haven't been in the US for very long. Most of the youth were born in the refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border and face different circumstances than the average Utah Mormon when it comes to family history. I had a difficult time working on mine as a youth because my family didn't really have any documents with names and birthdates and the papers that did had incorrect information. I encouraged them to find pictures and ask questions. I tried to emphasize how important it was to talk to their parents and ask to hear stories about their families and relatives and past. I'm not sure how much got through to them, but hopefully it helped someone. I wish it hadn't taken me so long to finally ask my parents about their lives and even now I haven't been doing a great job at keeping it a priority. So resolution for the year I will try to work more on my family history.
